Resin Bound Driveway Maintenance in Preston’s Wet Climate

Preston is wet, and a lot of local ground is clay. A well-installed resin bound driveway is still one of the lower-maintenance surfaces we fit — but it is not zero-care, and the climate will test a thin coat over a poor base.

This is the aftercare we stand behind on our own installs.

Day to day

Sweep when leaves and silt sit on the surface. Organic debris that sits wet is what stains and feeds moss, not the resin itself.

Avoid harsh solvents, strong acids and wire brushes. A garden hose or a gentle wash is enough for most dirt. If you use a pressure washer, keep it on a wide fan, at a sensible distance, and do not cut into the surface.

There are no sand joints for weeds to colonise the way they do in block paving. Weeds still appear at edges, borders and where soil meets the drive — treat those, not the bound surface.

Rain, clay and frost

Water should pass through a bound wearing course and away through the base or a planned outlet. If you see ponding, that is usually falls, edges or a blocked outlet — not a sign you need a different cleaner.

On clay plots, trapped water under a failing base does more damage than winter rain on a sound one. Freeze–thaw is hard on impermeable surfaces that hold water; bound copes better when the build-up is right.

Rock salt in small amounts is usually tolerated; it can leave a white film. Grit is kinder on the finish. Do not pile untreated salt against the resin and leave it.

What shortens the life

• Overlaying a cracked, pumping or oil-soaked base
• Cars turning on the same spot before the cure window is over
• Point loads (trailer jacks, skips) without protection
• Fuel and solvent spills left to sit
• Ignoring standing water at the threshold

With a proper base we typically talk about 10–15 years of service with light care — not a maintenance-free surface for 25 years.

When to call us

If the surface is shedding, softening, or holding water, send photos. Often the fix is drainage or an edge, not a full relay. Written guarantees cover the work we installed; we will be straight about what is wear, what is damage, and what is the original base.
