How to Install a Drainage Cube Soak Away

Soakaway crates (or drainage cubes) are an excellent modern solution for managing surface water in gardens, especially on the heavy clay soils common around Preston.

Step 1: Positioning the soakaway

Choose a location that is downhill from the area you need to drain and at least 5 metres from buildings and boundaries where possible. Avoid placing it near trees whose roots could damage the system.

Step 2: Sizing the soakaway

To be effective, soakaway areas need to have enough water storage capacity. Calculate based on the area being drained and expected rainfall. For most domestic gardens a single or double crate system is sufficient.

Step 3: Excavate the hole

Dig the hole to the required depth and dimensions, ensuring the base is level and the sides are stable.

Step 4: Line and install

Line the hole with geotextile membrane to prevent silt from clogging the system. Install the drainage cube(s) and connect the incoming pipework from your drainage channels or downpipes.

Step 5: Backfill and finish

Backfill carefully around the crate with clean stone or as per manufacturer instructions, then cover with membrane and reinstate the surface (lawn, gravel, etc.).

This system provides high-capacity water storage and allows gradual infiltration back into the ground, helping to prevent flooding and waterlogging even during heavy downpours.
