Resin Bound vs Bonded Driveways: Preston Homeowner Guide

Resin bound and resin bonded sound interchangeable. They are not. Around Preston and Leyland both get sold as “resin driveways”, and the difference shows up in loose stones, puddles and how the surface lasts.

We install resin bound, not bonded. This is why.

Bound: mixed, then laid

A resin bound driveway mixes the stone aggregate with the resin before it goes down. The stones are locked in a single, even layer. Done properly, the surface is smooth underfoot, there is no scatter of loose gravel, and water can pass through the wearing course.

That last point matters in Lancashire rain — but only if the base, edges and outlets are right. “Permeable” does not mean you can ignore falls toward the house.

Typical life with a sound base and light care is around 10–15 years. That matches how we spec the work, not a brochure maximum.

Bonded: glue, then scatter

A resin bonded driveway paints resin onto the base and then scatters stone on top. The stones sit on the surface rather than in it. The finish is rougher, stones shed onto paths and into the house, and the sealed top is not a permeable system.

Bonded is often cheaper on day one because it uses less resin and less prep. It is also the version most people regret when they thought they were buying bound.

Drainage and planning, without the sales line

A correctly installed bound surface can be part of a drainage-aware design. Bonded cannot — water sheds off it like tarmac.

Whether you need extra drainage, a soakaway or planning input still depends on the plot, the base and where water currently goes. We check that on survey rather than promising SuDS compliance from the wearing course alone.

Which should you specify?

Choose bound if you want a seamless drive, no loose stones, and a surface that can pass rain when the base is built for it.

Treat bonded as a different product. If a quote is markedly cheaper, ask which system it is — bound or bonded — in writing.
