Brushes, power brooms and vacuums are essential for keeping your artificial grass looking its best.
Artificial grass is a durable surface that can be used outside in any climate as long as it is cleaned regularly to remove dirt and debris.
There are many types of brushes, power brooms and vacuums that work well with artificial grass. This article will discuss the characteristics of each type of cleaner, so you know which one will work best on your lawn!
Why do we need to brush artificial grass?
The purpose of brushing is to remove dirt and debris from the surface and to keep the fibbers from going flat.
Artificial grass that has been neglected will not only have more build-up of dirt but can end up being damaged long term if not maintained.
Weeds can also be an issue if seeds and organic matter are allowed to sit for too long.
The best brushes for artificial grass
Normal house hold brushes will not be the best for artificial grass.
There are specially made brushes with stiff fibber bristles that can penetrate the fibres and remove dirt from deep within the blades–this type of brush is referred to as a “turf broom.”
You will probably find lots of rubber brushes which are labelled as “ideal” for artificial grass. We have found these to be no good and overall as they can’t get out dirt and dust which has gone into the fibres of the turf.

Outdoor vacuum vs power broom
You may be thinking to yourself, which one is best? Don’t they pretty much do the same thing?
Well yes and no. They do both get rid of leaves but that’s about where the similarities end.
An outdoor vacuum will be great and extremely fast for removing easy to move debris such as leaves and some dried dirt. However, when it comes to stubborn dirt and standing up flattened bristles it wont be much use.
It simply can’t move dirt with the same force as a power broom.
Power brooms are the number one tool for quickly moving lots of stubborn dirt, clearing up gravel and refreshing the fibres on your artificial grass. The jobs they can do are harder than the lighter tasks performed by a vacuum/ leaf blower.
So when it comes down to it we recommend a power broom over a brush and an outdoor vacuum. They will save your more time and effort than the other two combined. The only thing that would beat this is having all three!
What to look out for when choosing your brush, broom or vacuum cleaner
Depending on how big your artificial grass area is, it may be worth investing in a commercial-grade product which can take on large area. If you have just an average garden and want to save money then a basic brush should suffice.
However artificial grass can take a substantial amount of sweeping to keep clean so if you’re really lazy, or just want to save yourself some time then a power broom or an artificial grass vacuum will be best.
If your neighbours are particularly sensitive to noise or if the sound of outdoor machinery will disturb them then you should go for something that reduces this problem and is quiet enough not to bother anyone at all.
This can easily be achieved with a brush but if you are opting for a power broom make sure to go for an electric one rather than a petrol one.
The same can be said for outdoor vacuums which are sometimes noisy but have quiet versions available.
It’s worth investing in a good quality product that will last and be durable however the initial cost may put some people off, especially if they are not sure if it will work for them or not.
I like to work out how much time sweeping the garden and the artificial lawn will take me in a year then work out how much my time is worth. If the investment will cost less than my time then its a go!
If you only have a small amount of artificial grass then we recommend just going for a brush. For larger areas a power broom would be best!
If you are looking for something that will do the job of a power broom and vacuum all in one then an electric outdoor sweeper is your best bet. It can be used as both, it’s not too expensive and does the job quickly with no need to change tools!
All three types of tool will be useful for various outdoor jobs but by far the most useful are the power brooms which can be used to get stubborn dirt of almost anything.
